San Francisco Cable Cars
From the sound of the bells to the friendly engineers, the cable cars are part of San Francisco's very soul. They're also a great way to explore downtown. The line serves three separate routes, so it's a good idea to plan ahead. Use this quick guide to plan your trip:

• Powell-Mason Line – Runs from Powell and Market over Nob Hill to Bay Street at Fisherman's Wharf. A very useful line.
• Powell-Hyde Line – Also begins at Powell and Market and crosses Nob Hill. This line splits at Washington and continues on to Aquatic Park near Ghirardelli Square.
• California Line – This east-west line travels from the Financial District to Van Ness Avenue, passing through Chinatown and Nob Hill along the way.

Cable car passengers may board at any of the turntables (a major turntable is located right outside the hotel) or at any of the stopping points designated by a white and brown sign. This sign will contain information about the cars passing that particular stop. If you do not have a day or month pass, the one-way fee is $5 in cash paid to the conductor. Cable cars run from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. (past midnight). More information on routes and pricing.
